Does anyone have any comments on the actual value of the printfix solution? <http://www.typemaker.co.uk/products/cv_printfix.html> I notice that there is an offer including a spyder for monitor calibration.
I imagine one of the concerns that will emerge is the consistency, unit to unit, of the PrintFIX patch reader, and whether they come with some sort of individual calibration. Obviously if they all read the patches slightly differently but use the same software and reference tables they'll interpret the printer as being "off" to some extent and therefore correct it wrongly. I can't see any reference to its margin of error (gamma delta e) on either the Typemaker or Colorvision sites.
At this price point I'd doubt the accuracy - in two years time, when they have a mass market it'll be quite possible to use the benefits of scale to mass manufacture one, but at the moment I still hear doubts concerning the integrity of patch readers many times more expensive.
Having said that, this is definitely the way forward and (as soon as version 1.1 comes out with the most fatal bugs eliminated) I'll buy one so I can create profiles for non-mission critical pictures on odd materials I wouldn't otherwise pay to profile.
However if I wanted to feel confident that prints I supplied to a client were a faithful representation of the file supplied, I'd choose my profile by Thomas or Neil everytime.
