Seriously many agencies have specified Velvia for years as the film of choice. Is there anything else?
For saturated Landscapes, then no, of course not. But thats the joy of Velvia. Almost 'false' colour, looks even more contrasty when pushed +1, and takes filtration wonderfully well. Good with warm ups, looks good with red enhancers, polarizers etc (although looks a bit green with most of the polarizers I've tried).
But Velvia is not so good with skin tones under Flash, unless you want your subjects to look like they have been down the pub for 40 years! I've seen some nice people stuff done under HMI lighting with Velvia.
Velvia is one of those films which takes a bit of work to use well. It can be controlled well in development to control contrast, and works well with Filtration under differing conditions.
I know some scanning people say Velvia does not scan well, but like everything in the wonderful world of Photography it depends on the guy/girl doing the scanning. If the person is good, then I've seen beautiful Velvia Scans from all formats from 35mm to 10x8.
Having written this, it springs to mind that all this film talk sounds like ancient history. The first time I used a H20 it was such a revelation, the image, on the screen, with no messing with tests/clips/filtration tests/test rolls blah blah. AND the client can look over your shoulder and like what he sees there and then...fantastic
