This won't work in 16 bit because it requires a layer but I've found this approach does a good job fairly quickly and is agreeably non-destructive to the file.

On a flat image:

1. Duplicate the background layer
2. Change its mode to color
3. Viewing a fringed area at 100% run a gaussian blur at a level sufficient to neutralize color, usually between 3 and 5
4. If you find any objectionable softening to details then add a Hide All Layer mask and paint over your fringes with white
