A folder of 3D project files was uploaded to my site for my benefit
(host server Linux)

It is a directory with a large scale cross referenced file network much
like a website.

It contained a project off a PC

Somewhere along the line some someone (either the uploader or a person
who copied the original project) used a mac

The mac or the cd writer did not understand the long filenames so
filenames referred to in the master file as say:

ExpeditionOrangeColor.tif

now exist only as

EXPEDIT.TIF

It is the weekend and so far I cannot determine whether or not the error
occurred at the upload stage or whether the cd that the uploader is
inadequate.

I would quite like to know where the problem occurred asap because - if
the truncating occurred only at the upload stage, perhaps it can be sent
to me again before next week (and if it can I will persist in tracking
down the party who uploaded and shattering his weekend revelry)

...if it was the cd writing which lost the data then I can do nothing
till next week and may as go myself, and build sandcastles on the beach
till the dawning of the week.

What I do know is that the uploader used a mac with OSX and Fetch (which
could have been an old classic version)

Anyone familiar with the behavior of macs (OSX or OS9) in various
Joliet/non Joliet configurations able to make any educated guesses where
the problem was

Appreciate any thoughts
