I understand the color issues and purposes for using LAB, and this is not intended for this question. Yes, Christian *resample* must be checked for downsizing to occur, but thanks for the good links.

The reason for converting to LAB and downsizing in 50% increments with USM applied at each level is to achieve far superior JPEGS for web use, while maintaining a "one size fits all" work flow. JPEGS down sampled in this way accurately represent a high resolution scan or digital file without artifacts or loss of tonal range.
