In addition to the advices from Rod an Shangara I would suggest a full install with an update of the drivers and the firmware for all the disks you are working with.
I use PS CS on a daily basis, and today the day long with 3 layers with 3 layers masks, 3 adjustment layers, many alpha channels witch result on a 800MB file, I had snooping around (I like these words) with undo and all the tools and I had no crashes or inopportunely quits.
