We posted a moan with the same title on the forum a few days ago. Since then, we have come to the conclusion that Apple don't care.
Our new G5 multi processor is still being repaired for the second time in less than four months. The first repair took ten days. And then, after relatively light use, the same problem recurred and the computer has now been in the re-seller's workshop for over a week with no promise of a date for return. We have made a fuss and we have been offered a G4 powerbook on loan which Apple know is a completely pointless offer as we already have two G4s and we bought the G5 in order to run a scanner on USB2 and to write DVDs. A lot of our work is stranded on the hard disk of the G5 as we were unable to download it and we worry about its security. Our business at the moment is largely scanning and re-working a large collection of transparencies and so we have been effectively closed down by Apple. In a few days we had scheduled our short annual holiday and we are not inclined to let Apple destroy this for us as well so they will have some time to play with the rogue G5. As several of you who were kind enough to contact us directly and on forum pointed out the re-seller is undoubtedly gormless, inefficient and incompetent. We have more rights under French consumer law than Apple are prepared to grant us. But when we pointed this out to Apple they suggested that we employed a lawyer if we wanted to. That smacked of mild intimidation and complete contempt for our rights and our unfortunate situation for which Apple are entirely responsible. There is no doubt that Apple's policy is written in stone. If you are unfortunate enough to get one of their duds, they will make sure that you suffer and will do little or nothing to help. As we have complained shrilly both to Apple California and to Apple France we are now completely ignored. The dealer does not communicate at all. Anyone who thinks that our situation is unique should search "Apple Complaints" on Google. Amongst all the other similar problems, there is a lady in Toronto who had almost exactly the same problem with a G5. Buying Apple's three year Applecare plan may indeed help but a Google search shows that it does not always help and, in our opinion, Apple are persuading customers to pay for rights that European consumer laws already grant them. One thing is certain, Apple have no intention of changing this rule however many customers and fans it might drive away. When we return from our short holiday we will be seeking to give Apple the publicity they deserve and teaching ourselves to handle a Windows OS as Apple are abusing their effective monopoly over people who have chosen their operating system.
