1/ The FEE should be enough to cover the talent of the photographer.Yes, the FEE should always be in proportion to the talent/ experience etc. of the photographer
2/ all photographers should charge fees in relation to the value to the client AND by comparison to other equally rare professions.
Yes
3/ Expenses should be charged on the cost of buying in those services plus a modest, declared, percentage. 10 or 15%.And this is the question being thrown up in the air. Is there a way, a formula, to work out the cost of these services? My regular clients would baulk at paying rental type fees for my digital kit on every shoot so where do I put those costs, in higher fees?
Someone, a while back, mentioned a charge of 30 per CD of images. The problem is he didn't charge the hour+ it took him to deal with the images and gave the client the idea that he was overcharging for CD burning. Surely it is better to see an invoice with two items 1/Time spent processing 120 per hour and then 2/ CD burning at 3.
This is the crux of what is being asked. You are right, no one wants to charge 30 for a cd but then charging 120 an hour on top of an editorial fee wouldn't work either. Maybe 10% of a day rate per hour might fit and clients will see the 3 for a cd as being a good deal.
