It may be that it is not advised by LaCie because the BigDiscs are themselves RAIDs as far as I know. This is the same with their 1TB disk which is a few smaller drives made into one volume by software.
So it would not be recommended to RAID these.
Striped - is when you have several disks merged into one and data can be written across disks (so not dissimilar to what LaCie are doing).
But RAID 5 is a pretty standard way of ensuring some sort of mirror - it is used on servers round the world. So it can't be that bad! It is just advisable to use 2 separate unique Hard Drives.
If you keep 2 separate disks then some sort of mirroring app (File Synchroniser) might be an idea.
Also keep a spare system on the second disk so you can reboot if necessary. kind regards
