It goes in the hold Gary My experience is not so cut and dried - recent flight with Air France outbound, tripod fine as carry-on hand luggage - not so much as a second glance! Return flight - asked to check it in as hold luggage. When I pressed a little, I was told "oh, alright, you can just leave it the door to the aircraft and we'll put it in the hold as overspill hand luggage"! Bizarre if you ask me - seems to be a decision made on a whim by whoever's on the check-in desk...
