Thanks Neil. Note to myself: in future RTFM first. So the following may be of help to others. From Gretag PM 4.1.5 Help, searching on 'internal profile name' (I believe short extracts don't compromise copyright): "When you save an ICC profile in ProfileMaker and ProfileEditor, the file name is automatically transferred to the profile header, so that the file name matches the internal profile name. This does not happen if the file name is later changed by hand in Finder or Explorer" (note: this is what I'd done). "Since some programs (e.g. Adobe Photoshop) identify ICC profiles by their internal profile name in the header and not the file name, the names should be coordinated to avoid problems when using ICC profiles. You can change the profile name in Profile Information by making a manual entry in the Internal Profile Name field under the Change Profile Entries tab. Confirm the name with OK and save the profile with File/Save As.. An easier way to transfer the file name to the header of an ICC profile is to select the Update Profile Name ... tool from the Tools Menu in the toolbar. In the window that opens here, select the profile whose name you wish to change and press OK to confirm. The profile should not be open when you do this. The tool writes the file name to the header and so updates its name. The internal profile name is now identical to the name assigned to the profile at the operating system level." As Neil has pointed out, this can also be done easily in ColorThink. I have yet to follow this through on the client's system, but I had also profiled a second printer for him, installed without any alteration to the external filename, and proof setup was done without a problem, which seems to confirm the answer.
