Re installing is not as radical as it appears. I ended up doing it last week over the top thinking it would obliterate all my third party plugins but it didn't. They were all there as before. Prefs go but that's no big deal. I was trying everything to avoid reinstalling but in the end it was painless and solved my problem at least. Have you looked on the Adobe site for a known cause and cure.
