With regard to the problem below, Rod Wynne-Powell has kindly just called me
with the solution which is related to the clocks changing.

Apparently some Macs suddenly decide that they are in Cardiff rather than
London, which for some reason stops CS from working. The link which explains

This also may explain a problem that I had on my computer at home when I
upgraded to Panther, and Photoshop stopped working earlier in the year.
Since my wife is the main user of that machine and does not use Photoshop,
the problem was put to the back of my mind, but then at some point around
the time of the clocks moving forward, it all worked again.
