I was going to stay out of this, but...
Nikon View installs a bunch of code libraries, helper files and icc profiles
in various locations. iView uses the Nikon code libraries and profiles to
create its screen view of NEFs. These files get left behind if you delete
Nikon View.

So, strictly speaking, iView doesn't rely on helper *apps*, but does rely on
external code libraries installed by those apps to display NEFs.
