Dear Friends I would like to follow on from Jorge Parra's helpful comments, while this thread (which has been very interesting) has life in it....
OK, so I am not a Professional photographer. I am an artist (and I need also to be a musician). But to my mind the things that make a great photograph (which parallels with art) are things like: choice of subject, choice of location, choice of background, lighting, composition, angles, perspective, a knowledge, unconscious or otherwise of complementary colours, and a hundred other things, oh, and luck. Add to that interpersonal skills - getting the subject to pose, laugh, relax for portaits or glamour. Look at Martin Evening's books on PS. Thousand of tips and tricks. But essentially the guy's an artist. Nicely balanced pictures on which he uses the artist in him to enhance the correct colours and crop in a way that is pleasing to the eye. (Yes I am being simplistic, yes he does a bit more than that - just examples.) So at the risk of being patronising, and of enviting comments to "go away, you non-professional photographer", might I humbly suggest from a non-pro's point of view, that you pro guys and gels forget that ultimate success in your field is an art, not a science, and that is the bit you already have developed to be successful. That is the bit punters like. And the bit the nouveau-pro nurds don't have.. Be proud of what you have, and don't worry about the medium...
