Don't trash anything. He saved on Big Data: was it connected? You say the
files are visible in Capture One? Just the thumbnails? Can you edit any
files? If you can, they exist on your boot volume but Find and the Finder
can't see them because they're in a private System directory in which
Capture One has built its usual file structure.

Reboot your Mac in Target Disk Mode, attach it to another Mac, then search.
Finder can't look in private directories on the boot volume, but can look
there on disks mounted in Target Disk Mode. If for some reason the alias to
Big Data in your Volumes folder has been replaced by a folder and your files
are there, this procedure will reveal them and you can move them to
somewhere sensible. Mine's a pint at the AGM :-)

Put simplistically, the Volumes folder is where OSX records all volumes
which have been mounted by the system.
