Try the following

Open Terminal (in the Utilities folder)

Type

cd /Volumes/ (this changes directory to the Volumes directory)

Type

ls -af (this lists all files and folders whether invisible or not)

Can you see the name of the big disk or anything that is not a normal mounted drive (ignore things with a . in front such as .DS_Store)

If you see the name of something that resembles the Big Disk or anything that might be on it type:

cd <Thing you wish to view> (if the "Thing you wish to view" is a name with spaces in type it like this

cd Thing\ you\ wish\ to view

Then type
ls -af

Repeat for whatever looks interesting

If you eventually come across some of the files you are in luck they probably are still there.

If you see a file you recognise (For example DSC_0001.CRW)

Type

cp DSC_0001.CRW ~/<your username>/Desktop/

This will copy that file to your desktop folder.

Keep repeating this action until everything you can is copied.

If this hasn't worked try somewhere that does drive recovery. If it has worked then cheer loudly and promise never to buy a Big Disk again!!!!!! :-)

Good luck
