Martin, I took a quick look at the picture in Nikon Capture Editor (the paid for one) and a very minor tweak on the curve did wonders for the dark sections of the walls. I realize that you wanted to keep it clean but if you really want to compare the different software conversion options, why not use the best editor that Nikon produces? It is not expensive; in USA I think it is $99. Regardless, you can download an evaluation copy and test it to see its capabilities. At the same time, you get the option to do tethered shooting.
