The opinions of those who have tried it, such as Rob Galbraith and Michael Reichman are that good "L" glass is needed (or in some cases near "L" glass) is needed for the 1Ds Mk II.
There are many zooms in the L range so I don't think it is essential to stick to primes, apart from the 100m EF Macro if you want a good Macro/Portrait Lens - this isn't "L" but pretty close.
