Jeremy,
There are a lot of very good books around. I would tend to avoid the "Idiots
guide to...", "Learn Photoshop in 24 hours" etc style of books as although
they are usually cheaper they generally have fairly crude examples, mostly
just skimming the surface and are not really aimed at Pros, workflow issues
etc. A few I can recommend and use regularily:

"Real World Adobe Photoshop CS", by David Blatner and Bruce Fraser. Has good
in depth heavy duty info on workflow and handling Raw files, colour
management etc. As well as all the other things you can use CS for. Not just
a "Do it like this" book. It gives the reasons for and examples why this way
or that way is the preferred method.

"Adobe Photoshop for Photographers", by Martin Evening. Heaps of good in
depth info with very good examples about all aspects of Photography using
digital equipment.

"The Adobe Photoshop CS book for Digital Photographers", by Scott Kelby. A
simpler "how too" book thats handy, via the index for finding step by steps
on how to do particular tasks, "Fix redeye", "Working with Raw Dig. Cam.
images", "Stiching Panoramas together" etc etc.

"Adobe Photoshop CS Studio Techniques", by Ben Willmore. Another useful
heavy duty book with very good examples.

I have all of these and then some next to my workstation. I don't think
anyone book does it all as some go into more detail in some areas, and
lighter on others. I generally have a squizz in at least 2 or 3 for a
particular problem I might have. The solution in one book might work better
for me than another. Prepare to spend some money as they are all quite
pricey and may need upgrading as software/equipment changes and develops.
