I occasionally had a problem like this with the 1290's predecessor, in lighting situations similar to the one you describe. I believe the Light Black ink of the 2100 printer goes along way towards dealing with the problem - though I appreciate that doesn't really help you.
It's probably worth mentioning that although my screen is correctly calibrated using an eye one monitor, the printer is still using Ilford's website profile to go with the smooth pearl paper I am using.
I think I was always very lucky with the canned Epson profiles. When I finally did get a custom profile made, the areas that benefited most were the deep shadows. For me the custom profile has only offered a marginal benefit, however it was worth every penny. I hope one will solve your print problem.
