I wondered when this would happen. A similar technique was used in the early
1990's with audio A/D converters to get beyond 16 bits of dynamic range, one
converter sampling from full scale downwards, the second from -18dB
downwards, output from the two crossfaded.

I was involved in the development of a 20-bit Yamaha A/D which used this
technique. It mostly sounded fantastic, especially against 16-bit
converters. There *were* crossfade artefacts audible at the crossover point
on certain programme material, notably drums. I wonder whether the S3 will
also artefact? If it does, it'll probably take a while to learn to see it.
