APIs (or SVCs, Ers, etc.) are good things.  They provide a consistent
interface between the application program and the OS.  The actual number
available should be taken with a grain of salt because you don't know if
they count a single API with 3 major options as one API or three.

The preceding statement is true and accurate assuming that the APIs are
part of a well-structured, secure, operating environment with prudent
safeguards to protect the system from harm.  Use only as directed.
Consult your physician for additional information.  Your mileage may
vary.

MS likes to trumpet how difficult Linux is to install, manage,
configure, etc.

At the keynote for SWFox last year (the slides are around somewhere on
the MSFT site), MSFT trumpets "Vista has 3500 brand new APIs!!!". And it
was said (the APIs) as if it was a good thing.
