! 1. should be John LE Carré

Yep, you're right. It was a typo I made in my haste to make it out the
door in time for our family's week-end get-away.

! 2. he's a far better better writer than Ludlum

Le Carré? Actually, I agree with you. Ludlum's characters are very
unidimensional (good guys are great guys; bad guys are thoroughly bad
guys); whereas Le Carré's are rather interesting individuals with
conflicting motives, like, well, real people.

The author of the article in question would be able at best to pull
off a boring Ludlum novel. He treats the 'cabalists' with the same
literary sensitivity that Ludlum does the bad guys in his Acquitaine
Progression, and his conclusions are similarly way too inexorable.

! 3. his plots are rather believable...

Assuming you're still talking about Le Carré, again I agree. I
especially liked A Perfect Spy but really all his novels are quite
believable because the characters are believably conceived an
believably conveyed. Any plot is believable with good
characterization. I don't always like his POV, but there's no
questioning his literary credentials.

Conversely, even a great plot can fall flat if the characters aren't
believable. Which is part of why I can't take the arguments Bill tries
to offer up seriously. You have to believe a lot of intelligent people
are incurably stupid or at least pathetically gullable, and you have
to believe the neo-cons themselves are so uniformly evil and
cosmically powerful. Except Bush, whom you have to believe is both an
imbecile and seductively persuasive---clearly the best guy the
neo-cons could have put up as a front man, because of how gosh darn
charismatic he is (after all, he even duped the much smarter Kerry and
countless other supposedly really bright folk with his convincing
pro-war arguments, which nobody could find any fault in until long
after the fact).

In short you have to drink your own kool aid to believe any of it.
