The SMTP protocol, created in the days of Arpanet, assumes that when you say you are X, that you actually are X. There is no verification inherent in the system, although there are several add-ons that attempt to achieve this.
The answer is to write a verifiable, authenticating version of SMTP that is more in line with the reality of the internet today. All these other attempts are bound to fail in some way because SMTP just doesn't cut it.
