It also goes away if you hit spacebar, then backspace. I appreciate
it...sometimes, but sometimes, like you point out it "helps" a little
too much.

Does anyone know how to turn off the annoying feature that completes
your typing in the command window? VFP9 SP2
Typed 'set defa to', three times in a row and {enter} acted upon
SET DEFAULT TO to <dirname> because I didn't notice it had completed
the command for me. As you type 'set defa' it completes the command
automatically, as it does for all commands. I've not seen this before
VFP9, the last version I used was VFP6, and I don't even know what
it's called.
