It helps explain their world view which gives an insight into the values they 
bring to the decision making process.   For instance, the American revolution 
was for fought for 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' and the French 
revolution for 'liberty, equality, fraternity'.  There is a big difference in 
how those two thought processes play out... one is more individualistic, the 
other more collective.  

This is why the religious right sees people as individuals with individual 
responsibility to God and their fellow men, the religious left sees more of 
groups of people that need collective measures... hence the social gospel.
