Hi Whil, My ThinkPad, which is a year old is not as rugged as Whil's. I am not saying it is a bad machine. I am saying it is not as solid as the ThinkPads I used in the 1990s.
I can also vouch for the Vostro line from Dell. I purchased one for my mom and daughter and they have held up to their pounding for the last six months. Solid boxes that you can still get XP on if you have that preference, and no junk software preloaded on the boxes I have purchased (like Works, or anti-virus that is painful to unload).
