Malcolm, I've owned two Brother Multi-Function monochrome laser units and both gave absolutely no problems up through the 5+ year range. This is about when I decide it's time for a new unit, usually because a new drum will be required in the near future<g>. Actually I'm at that point again now and with a drum running $180 USD, I am toying with getting another unit, but not because of anything wrong with the printer. In fact I'm really hesitant to replace it because I like it so much. I may just shop for a new drum.
I however don't like the software they come with. Never was able to get comfortable with in. Under Win 98, it always gave me problems and I've really never gone back to it. I would think that a straight laser with just a printer driver would give you no issues. I've also had clients with Brother Lasers and they have never had any problems with them. I would not think twice about purchasing another Brother.
