The thing with ram though is that you need to make sure that it is fast ram, or
have a lot of it will not speed things up. Having 10 GB of DDR PC2700 won't be
as fast as 3 GB of DDR3 PC 6700. But yes, the price of ram has come down and
with a powerful enough CPU and 2.5 times the amount of ram you need for one OS
then you can have a Host OS and a Virtual Machine of the same or less system
specs.

Subject: RE: Dual Boot Desktop Machine Recommendations

Jeff,

My actual experience with VM was in the IBM world, and in that context
we could run any OS under VM, even VM (again). So, my expectation is
that VM in the PC world can do similarly and that you shouldn't have any
problem running any of the OS's you choose to in a VM environment - that
the only real obstacle was having enough RAM to do so without a
performance hit. With the price of RAM having dropped as it has, that's
no longer an obstacle. Thus it seems that you (and I, everyone) would
want to make this change ourselves.

I have different machines with different versions of Windows (except
Vista) because I bought them way and most of my time is using XP with
little real need to run the others except for some testing or
convenience. When I do upgrade again though, it seems a clear path to go
with VM and copious RAM.
