Yes, through a SSL connection. I first check for an internet connection; then 
if the SSL appliance is available then finally the server. Many places are 
shutting off ICMP. I believe that trace route is a function of ICMP packets but 
not sure. 
I appreciate the other ideas from Ed and Stephen but this is a dedicated server 
for data and not a web server. I really don't know how to approach this.
When we were in our old arena power failures were common. But the new house has 
a power backup system that will keep the MDF alive for (I think) 9 hours so 
maybe this is not an issue.
I would like to keep that functionality of the app so if the server is 
available continue to the share mapping so I can give some intelligent feedback 
to the scouts.
