Saudi Arabia executed three men found guilty of rape on Monday. Whilst the Kingdom is often criticised by human rights activists for the severity of its punishments, the crime which resulted in the public beheadings was particularly heinous. The crime took place two years ago when three men broke into a house late at night in the Al-Mushrefah district of north Jeddah. The victim, a maid, who was not identified by name or nationality, was attacked when she started screaming after seeing the men scaling the wall into the home. Arab News reported "The criminals overpowered two men who came out of their rooms hearing the woman's screams. They tied and gagged the men before sodomizing them." They then threatened to kill the maid and repeatedly raped her. Two of the executed men, Ahmad Zain Ishaq and Muhammad Bashir Hasan, were from Chad. The third man was Saudi national Badr bin Sami Al-Sudani. The Arab press has not reported on their trial or if the maid was punished for having sex, a penalty often imposed on rape victims in the Kingdom. The execution follows that of two Saudi men beheaded for rape and house breaking in October.
