There's a difference between a punch and a take in this case. As you punch on the track, you are only creating a new region. When you are finished, your playlist contains multiple regions. Create a new playlist, you have a new blank canvas to record a brand new take. You can actually set Pro Tools to create a new take every time you hit stop. This works great for when you are recording something that you know will have no punches. Otherwise, I leave that setting off so I can create a new playlist at will. Hope that helps.
