I have a 2tb drive that is same specs and brand. I have been using it for a
couple of years and it is working great and very nice for editing. I can
record to my regular internal drive on the Mac Book Pro, which is also a
7200 WD drive, and it works fine. In fact, I used said setup last night to
record the Messiah in which my wife performed.

Yes 4 GB ram will be fine for a start but if you can aford the 8 GB from the
start it will obviously be better. As I understand you are looking to get
the quad core mini with the 1 TB hard drive and 4 GB of ram and this will be
fine together with a 7200 RPM external firewire
800 drive. I only have experience with Seegate and western digital drives
and can highly recommend both. I would suggest rather getting a drive which
is spesifically only firewire 800, those combo things could be nice if using
the drive on different devices, but it often doesn't have the best quality
firewire chips and what you're looking for here is a quality drive with
quality firewire chips and you'll get the best quality from seagate or
western digital.
