Hey Chris, A gate acts almost like an on off switch for whatever audio you run through it. When the gate is closed, you won't hear the audio on that track. When the gate is open, audio passes through untouched. Probably their most common use is on individual drum tracks to minimise bleed between microphones. Taking toms for example, you might put a gate plugin on each of your tom tracks so that the audio only passes when a tom is actually being hit, the gate would be closed the rest of the time to cut out the weird overtones and junk you'll get coming through that microphone from a tom ringing away to itself as the rest of the kit is being thumped in close proximity to it. The controls on a gate are usually pretty similar to what you'd find on a compressor plugin, so you'll have a threshold that sets a level for when the gate is to open, an attack which sets how fast it opens, decay setting how quickly it'll close when the audio drops back below the threshold level etc.
In the case of your vocal, I figured the miscelaneous bits of noise I could pick out would've been a lot quieter than your actual singing, so instead of going through and editing the track, you might be able to get away with cheating and slapping a gate on to do the job instead. In this instance, you'd probably want it on an insert before any compression, because the compression will likely be diminishing the volume difference between the unwanted background noises and your full singing voice. It's been a while since I used PT now, but I think you'll find a gate in the dynamics plugin menu if you want to give it a shot. Tbh, dividing any dead space when you're not singing into regions and muting or deleting those regions would be the textbook way to approach this, but sometimes gating to clean up can be a real time saver for lazy people like me lol.
