Having both a series of track control strips (faders, solo, mute, record
buttons, etc.) is useful for working faster. For precise editing, a scrub wheel
is indispensable. Having everything in one package, as Kevin suggested, is, of
course, the most desirable option. Having the option to use a surface with
other DAWs may or may not be a consideration for you. With the Avid surfaces,
the Pro Tools integration is more immediate and consistent but, with no support
for other platforms, there's a price for that seamless operation. I'm glad
Kevin mentioned the aesthetics of the Artist system with the power bricks and
network switcher. I agree they could've made it a little more elegant. That's
too bad. That said, to me, for those only working with Pro Tools, the most
flexible option currently available, especially when using a separate audio
interface, seems to be the Artist series. As mentioned, naturally, your mileage
may vary and I'm only adding my two cents to Kevin's and now we're a penny shy
of a nickel.
