Thanks for the pointer.  gnuplot looks like just the way to get going.

Octave is a free Matlab like tool. I have no idea if Octave has a

I believe Octave uses Gnuplot for its plotting backend, but
they may have changed that since I checked.  In any case,
I have never been terribly enthusiastic about Octave's
graphics capabilities.  You should check out Scilab at
http://www-rocq.inria.fr/scilab/  Definitely some nice graphics
and plotting capabilities.
