  I find with the built in microphone their is some automatic gain control 
that works quite well. I only wish that was switchable with the line in as 
well.

Do you use the built-in microphone? One cannot adjust the recording
volume, when one does this. If the level is high with the built-in mic,
the reader has to get further away or read with a lower voice.

When I try to adjust the recording level, I get the *can't do this* tone.

to bring it down a bit, but it won't let me.

If I come out of recording standby mode, I can adjust the recording 
levels as normal, but then I don't know if it's high, low or good.  I
