I agree with Nigel and Micah: don't put the distro specific bits in the upstream tarball/branch. If the issue is to have binary packages of later releases available sooner publishing an apt repository is probably the best option. For Ubuntu using [PPA](https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA) is a good option. Combining with [Bzr builder](https://launchpad.net/bzr-builder) makes it possible to automatically build any revision of the upstream branch.
