It depends on your position on the change in behavior. We're
essentially returning to the pre-2.7.x behavior right?

I've had quite a few people tell me that they consider the 2.7.x
behavior with undef in templates a bug, in which case "deprecating
functionality" doesn't quite cover the situation.
