Most RedHat-ish distributions ship packages of gcc 4.4, which should make installing that reasonably straightforward. Other than that, make sure that -DBOOST_... is actually getting passed to the compiler. If that doesn't work, even upgrading gcc within version 4.1 might help--some people report success with that.
