as a follow-up, i can now get it to work on my personal computer running windows xp using the normal installation steps. the server i'm trying to get it installed on is an old server running windows server 2003 and perhaps it just has a bunch of other conflicting things that are causing the problems. we'll have to look into those next.
so if you have any thoughts based on my prior emails or perhaps operating system integration, wonderful. but otherwise i think we have to start looking at our server for conflicts. thanks for your help. matt
