yes - a nice gdal frontend for cropping/merging/resampling rasters would be cool.
I also thought it may be possible to use the Google maps data from within QGIS. One could probably use a hidden Webkit to make Google think it is a regular webbrowser that is requesting the tiles - and then merge and potentially reproject the GoogleMap tiles to use it as a regular background layer in QGIS.
