You should have a look at the FPSAVE package documentation (especially fpsave_text). FPSAVE sets sys_ptyp, if not already set. If you program in C and use FPSAVE you don't have to worry about different versions of FPUs or having a FPU at all or not. It's all handled by FPSAVE.
