Next to OSM's mkgmap there is gmaptoolshttp://www.anpo.republika.pl/download.html#gmaptool
Unfortunately, this is apparently not free software and available only in pre-compiled form. No chance to use it on my PowerMac, neither with OS X nor with Linux!
I would start with mkgmap wiki page: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Mkgmap
Mkgmap *does* actually work on the PowerMac, at least running Linux (Ubuntu Jaunty) where I can use IBM Java ver. 1.6. OS X/Tiger still comes with Java 1.5, and mkgmap refuses to run. Using the examples, I could produce proper img files which I can view in QLandkarte. Nice. Thanks for that hint! QLandkarteGT refuses to load the tdb file, though, as it apparently has been developed for little endian platforms only... Back to Qlandkarte.
And if everything fails fire up gmaptools with wine.
Heh heh, works on little endian *and* Intel only, again! Thanks, Albrecht.
