FWIW, last summer, I found out that it was possible to convert FIT files 
(to GPX) with the latest versions of GPSBabel. I really had to get a 
very recent version (the one already installed on my distro would not do 
it). I don't know how they solved the decoding problem, but as far as I 
understand, they pretty much reverse-engineered and re-implemented the 
format interface, maybe to work around this legal / licensing issue.
