I'm running OpenLDAP 1.2.11. Per your earlier recommendation, I'm installing 
phpQLAdmin 1.0 as well and their website seems to recommend 1.2.11 over 
anything higher. Something about OpenLDAP 2.x not processing special 
characters correctly yet, I think.

Wonderful - I'm impressed that you were able to locate the relevant code so 
quickly!

This is a relief to know we can continue to use /service to control 
OpenLDAP. After my initial confusion with /service, I'm beginning to like 
/service a lot.

Thank you for taking the time to look into this. I realize now that that I 
wasn't very clear in explaining my slapd stop issue and I'm very glad that 
you hung in there with me until I finally quoted the OpenLDAP slapd stop 
documentation.
