We ran a similar configuration with about 600k users and 4TB of space
with 6 4-processor E-450's with Sparc Storage Arrays for their queues
handling SMTP, 6 UE2's (which are no longer made; they're smallish
two-processor SPARC machines) for POP and IMAP (nearly all of our
users were POP), and 6-10 E-450's with Sparc Storage Aray disks for
data for read-only LDAP replicas to handle requests coming from mail
and other services. Maildirs were on a pair of as-fast-as-they-come
Network Appliance Filers using NFS. Try to add as much storage to the
Filers as you can up front; we kept adding additional disks to the
Filers as they filled up, and eventually their performance became
terrible. We had to borrow two identically configured filers and move
all mail over to them to fix the problem.
