john, thanks for your quick reply.  here are the changed file permissions:

loki:/var/qmail/control # ls -l ldappassword
-rw-r-----  1 root  nofiles  10 Nov 21 22:17 ldappassword
loki:/var/qmail/control # ls -l ldaplogin
-rw-r-----  1 root  nofiles  43 Nov 21 22:17 ldaplogin

still no luck.


i see this in the ldap log when i attempt auth:
