Hi all,
Although I am new to this list, I have been running a Linux user group
for over a decade, and have done software development that dealt with
Open Source. Perhaps another perspective could be useful.
It is sad but true that nobody wants to pay for software. No matter how
much we understand the amount of hard work that goes into it, businesses
won't pay for it. If there are two ways to get something done and one
of them is free, most businesses will choose the free route.
I suspect that the number of Qmail Toaster users would drop dramatically
if you had to either pay for a tool to create multiple virtual domains,
or had to use the CLI to do it.
I sincerely doubt this would be a dramatic drop. The fact is, vqadmin
cannot be used to create a domain that works. That part is broken. The
only option for quite some time was to use the CLI for that.
Jake did a great job creating qcontrol to fill the need of creating (and
maintaining) a domain from a gui interface. As Phil pointed out (and I
too agree whole heartedly), qcontrol is free for single domains, so
there is now a gui tool for creating domains. I also agree that it's
totally appropriate for commercial (multi-domain) users to pay the small
fee for it.
I'd also like to add that including a broken, unsupported package
damages the image of an otherwise very high quality set of packages. It
is also unfortunate because vqadmin is a part that is frequently exposed
early on to new users. If this were a commercial endeavor, I believe
that vqadmin would be either fixed or dropped in a heartbeat. That's
just my opinion though.
Thanks again for the input, Adam.
